Seeta Can Still Bring The Jailbirds To Heel
By Bob Hart
Seeta Indrani, formerly of British telly hit THE BILL, was relaxing after a hard day at the station when something peculiar happened. 'A program came on the TV and I wondered what the hell it was,' she said yesterday. 'I watched it in disbelief. And then a week later I saw it again. And then I was hooked.'
The program was PRISONER. And did she like it because it offered insights into the other side of the law enforcement business? Well no... 'It was the entertainment value rather than the educational benefits that attracted me,' insisted the woman who plays WPC Norika Datta in THE BILL.
Indrani, a Londoner, is in Melbourne for the second time in a matter of months. She likes us. And she spent at least part of yesterday with PRISONER escapees Anne Phelan (Myra Desmond) and Janet Andrewartha (Reb Keene) - signing Doc Marten shoes for an AIDS charity auction. Phelan, now in SOMETHING IN THE AIR on the ABC, and Andrewartha who appears on Ten at the same time in NEIGHBOURS, both claim to be fans of THE BILL. 'I've watched it for years and years,' said Phelan. 'And I love it too,' said Andrewartha. So there.
Next month, Indrani will appear on a police float in Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. But possibly not wearing Doc Martens. Just what Superintendent Brownlow would make of any of this, I tremble to think.
